When Studying Chapter 2: Minerals, a highlight of the entire semester and Chapter 2 is to introduce gems and sometimes a local geologist comes to the classroom to explain the 4 "C's" of diamond buying (actually 5 when you add the C for Cost); difference between diamond, rubies, emeralds, etc.

Gemology

In the 1940s, GIA established the “4Cs” and the International Diamond Grading System™ – to this day, the worldwide standard for evaluating diamond quality:

While on cruises to the Caribbean, I spend a lot of time in the husband's chair in jewelry story after jewelry store. One of my jokes is the $3000 coke I had while waiting in St Thomas; or the $800 beer in Jamaica; and so forth. However, I have collected a great folder of handouts explaining gemology

In the future, I will add a collection of web sites from many of these stores plus general info, U-tubes etc to teaching you how to buy good jewelry..a part of Earth Science.

Gemology or gemmology is the science dealing with natural and artificial gemstone materials. It is considered a geoscience and a branch of mineralogy. Some jewelers are academically trained gemologists and are qualified to identify and evaluate gems.
